Role overview
Hazard Management and Safety Case Production are core skills for VT Nuclear Services. There is demand for our expertise across the waste management, decommissioning and clean up, new build and CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosive) markets and therefore we seek Senior Safety Case Specialists to be based in our offices at Daresbury, Quedgeley, with opportunities for visits and secondments to Aldermaston and other UK nuclear licensed sites. Overseas work.
Main responsibilities
- To develop Hazard Management strategies, which are demonstrably ALARP and cost effective, which result in engineering solutions within budget.
- To deliver complex safety cases for waste management, decommissioning and new build projects
- Maintaining and developing customer relationships, through reputation, knowledge and experience to encourage follow-on and new work within the skill area, to promote further business.
- Provide mentoring and training to staff.
- Ensuring that conventional health & safety and environmental protection requirements are assessed and embodied in the design.
- Ensuring that the Licensee’s Safety Principles are embodied in the safety case and the design.
- Chairing and participating in hazard identification exercises and HAZOP studies.
- Undertaking Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessments Quantitavely and Qualitatively
- Producing consequence assessments
- Carrying out fault and event tree analysis
- Specifying the requirements for specialist analysis and interpreting the results e.g. Shielding, Dose Uptake Assessment, Criticality, Human Factors and Ergonomics
- Internal and External Hazards Assessment
- Developing delivery strategies and producing detailed and fully resourced programmes and cost estimates for bids.
- Resourcing, technically leading and project managing safety case delivery teams to deliver acceptable solutions within programme and budget
- Recruiting and interviewing new team members
- Identifying practicable and implementable safety measures for operating units
Qualifications and Experience
- Engineering or Science Degree and ideally achieved Chartered Status
- Significant experience in the nuclear industry working in a nuclear safety environment critical
- Knowledge of nuclear waste management facilities/processes and/or reactor plants and/or complex nuclear new build facilities
- Responding to independent and regulatory assessments
- Developing, producing and delivering safety cases (PSR, PCSR, PICR, PACR, POSR, SCSOR, PMP, Decommissioning Safety Cases)
- Hazard analysis (DBAA, PSA, fault trees, event trees)
- Developing ALARP arguments
- Excellent communication and liaison skills

Strong project delivery skills
Ideally:
- Post graduate qualification in safety and environmental risk management
- Experience of working in a contracting organisation or consultancy.
- Experience of operating plant on a nuclear licensed site.
